You switch your phone to a warmer setting. The screen looks less blue. But the room still has a bright ceiling light, and the last task of the night keeps turning into another half hour.
Night mode can change a display. It does not change everything about an evening. This guide explains the different pieces, what the studies tested and where amber glasses fit as an eyewear choice.
A warm display setting changes the screen. Tinted lenses filter light passing through the lenses, including light from more than one source. A routine changes what you do and when you stop. None of those facts alone guarantees better sleep.
What does Night Shift actually change?
Apple describes Night Shift as moving display colours towards the warmer end of the spectrum. It can run on a schedule and has a colour-temperature control. This is a change to the display's colour output. Read Apple's explanation.
“Night mode” is also used loosely. A dark theme changes the appearance of the interface. A brightness control changes brightness. A warmer colour setting changes the colour balance. When reading a study or adjusting a device, check which change is meant.
What did the sleep trial find?
A 2021 randomised study included 167 people aged 18–24. Over seven nights, groups used an iPhone before bed with Night Shift on, used it with Night Shift off or avoided phone use for that period. The researchers found no significant sleep-outcome differences across the full sample. An exploratory subgroup analysis favoured no phone use for some participants. Read Duraccio and colleagues' study.
That does not mean every person's experience is identical. It means the study does not support promising that enabling Night Shift will fix sleep. It also did not test Dante, Ember or Solace.

A change in melatonin is a different outcome
Another study examined acute melatonin suppression under different iPad Night Shift conditions. Its authors stressed that light intensity matters as well as spectral composition, and that changing colour alone may be insufficient. A laboratory hormone response is not the same as a full night's sleep or treatment of insomnia. Read Nagare and colleagues' paper.
This is a useful rule for any claim: name the outcome. A screen can look warmer without the study having measured sleep. A measured light filter does not, by itself, prove a health benefit.
How are amber glasses different?
A screen setting affects that screen. Glasses filter light passing through the lenses while you wear them. They do not alter the lamp itself, and light can still reach the eye around a frame.
Dante and Ember use amber blue light blocking lenses. Dante has a square black frame. Ember has a round frame with available colours shown on its product page. Their warm tint changes the view, which matters for tasks needing accurate colour judgement.
The wider clinical evidence for blue light filtering glasses has limits. A 2023 Cochrane review found uncertain evidence for sleep outcomes. It does not establish that a particular pair treats insomnia. Read the review.
For the migraine-related FL-41 topic, see our separate Solace and light-sensitivity guide. An amber lens and an FL-41 tint should not be treated as interchangeable clinical interventions.
Build a routine you can actually repeat
Start by writing down the task that must be finished. Decide what “finished” looks like before opening another app. That is a planning prompt, not a sleep treatment.
Then look at the setting. Which lights are on? Are there other screens in view? Which device settings have you changed? Knowing the answers helps you describe what you are doing, rather than relying on one toggle's name.
If you choose amber glasses, keep your goal clear: you are selecting a tinted eyewear option. Notice whether the view suits the task and whether the frame is comfortable. Do not judge the whole routine on one night's sleep.
