Light Makes Migraine Worse? A Clear Guide to FL-41 Glasses

Advertisement · Heritage Gaze London

When light makes migraine harder, the lens deserves a closer look.

A screen can feel too bright. Overhead lights can feel harsh. Even a normal room can be hard to stay in. If that sounds familiar, you may have heard of FL-41 glasses.

Here is what that tint does, why researchers study it and where Solace fits.

First: light sensitivity has a name

Photophobia means light feels uncomfortable or painful. It is common in migraine, but other eye or health problems can cause it too. A pair of glasses cannot tell you the cause.

The goal of a tint is simple: change the light reaching the eye. It is one possible tool to discuss as part of managing light sensitivity.

Why a tint can matter

The eye does more than help us see. Light also sends signals to parts of the brain that affect how we feel. In migraine, light can feel far too strong. This is called photophobia. It means light sensitivity.

FL-41 changes the light that passes through the lens. Researchers have studied this tint for light discomfort. The aim is to make bright settings easier to manage for some people.

One light-sensing system in the eye uses a pigment called melanopsin. Its response is strongest near 480 nm. That helps explain why researchers study light colour. It does not mean every FL-41 lens has one fixed blocking band.

The exact filter depends on the lens. We do not publish an exact wavelength range or blocking percentage for Solace without a report for this lens. Read the optical and light-pathway research.

What does “FL-41” actually mean?

FL-41 is a specialist tint. Its rose tone changes the mix of light passing through the lens. It is a name you will see in research on light sensitivity.

A tint is not a diagnosis or a cure. Nor is it proof of an exact blocking percentage. The lens material and depth of tint can affect its filter.

This matters because “blocks blue light” is a wide label. Solace is the FL-41 option in our range. We do not treat Dante or Ember as FL-41 glasses.

What has FL-41 research found?

Migraine research · 1991

20 children

A promising early finding

A four-month study compared rose and blue tints. In the rose-tint group, average headache frequency fell from 6.2 to 1.6 a month. The blue-tint group did not sustain its early improvement.

A small study in children. It did not test Solace or establish the same result in adults. Read the study.

Light-sensitivity research · 2024

19 of 25 adults

Less light discomfort reported

In a study of chronic eye pain and photophobia, 19 people reported less light-evoked unpleasantness with FL-41. Two reported no change and four reported more.

A separate light-threshold study found that both grey and FL-41 lenses helped, with no clear difference between them. Results vary with the person, the lens and the test. Read that study.

These studies concern FL-41 or other research lenses. None tested Heritage Gaze Solace. They do not promise a drop in migraine attacks or pain for this product.

Why we do not claim one magic wavelength band

Light comes in many wavelengths. Nanometres, or nm, are how we measure them. A lens can let more of one part through and less of another.

The FL-41 lens in the chronic eye-pain study reduced light across a broad range, about 430–630 nm. That was the tested lens in that study, not a measurement of Solace. It is why a claim such as “every FL-41 lens blocks precisely 480–520 nm” is too simple.

For Solace, we will add an exact transmission curve when a report identifying the lens is available. Until then, we explain the tint without making up a graph.

What might this mean in daily life?

Think about the moments when light gets in the way. A bright workspace. A screen session. A shop with strong overhead lighting. Those settings give you a clear question to discuss with an eye-care professional: might a tint suit this need?

FL-41 research gives that question a basis. It does not guarantee a result in every room or during every attack. Comfort is personal.

A useful next step is to understand the pair itself. Look at the frame, see the tint and check the price. Solace offers the FL-41 route in a simple adult unisex style.

Before you choose

Solace costs £59.99 for one pair. Its lenses are visibly tinted, so colours will look different. We have not confirmed this exact product’s dimensions, driving suitability or optical transmission percentages.

Speak to an optometrist if you need fit or prescription advice, or want to use tinted lenses as part of a migraine care plan. Keep any prescribed treatment in place.

If headaches or light sensitivity are new, severe or changing, seek medical advice. See NHS migraine advice.
